Diamonds' Class

Spring A 2017/2018                  DIAMONDS CLASS Year 1/2

Dear Parents and Carers,

A warm welcome back everyone and a huge Hello from me.  I hope you all had a lovely Christmas break and that you are ready for the fun of this new term. I’m looking forward to getting know the Diamonds and have lots of exciting work planned that I have outlined for you.

Things to remember:

  • School times – 8.45am – 3.15pm. Classroom doors are open from 8:35. Please leave your children at the entrance to the classroom, unless you need to speak to me or Mrs Calam about your child.
  • Uniform – please make sure ALL items of clothing are named, including coats and PE kits.
  • PE– Wednesday and Thursday. Every Wednesday afternoon your child will be taking part in gymnastics sessions, Thursday sessions will be dance. It is important that your child has their indoor PE kit for these sessions.
  • Homework will be given out on a Friday and due in on the following Wednesday- please support your child with this where possible.
  • Weekly spellings will be given out on a Friday (with homework) to be practised at home ready for a test on the following Friday.
  • Your child will have two instant recall target facts (SMIRFs) for maths and these are found at the back of their reading record. Please support your child to practise these at home ready to be tested at least fortnightly in school. If you have any questions regarding the SMIRF targets, please do not hesitate to ask. If you don’t have your child’s targets please let me know and I can get them for you.
  • Daily reading – your child will bring home a reading book each day, please sign in your child’s reading record and indicate pages read. We are also continuing a reading challenge this year – each time your child reads at home they will get a point. When your child reaches 21 points they will receive a special prize!

Diamonds topics

· English
We will be reading a selection of performance poems and learning one of these by heart using actions to help us.
I have chosen two lovely books that we will be reading, one called ‘Beegu’, a story about a lost alien and ‘Aliens Love underpants’. During our English sessions, we will be looking at phonics, real and nonsense words and descriptive language. We will also be completing character descriptions, a newspaper report and a creative story about a visiting alien.

· Maths
We will be doing a quick recap of number bonds, addition and subtraction just to remind the children of these before moving on to look at multiplication and division. I hope to finish the half term with some data, graph and chart work.
The children will be using a range of skills and learning to record their number work accurately and confidently.

The afternoon topics this half term will include:

· Geography – Looking at our local area and comparing it to another country.

· Computing – Purple mash units. We will be spending some time looking at different types of technology and how they are used in and out of the homes. Later we will be using simple computer programs to group and sort items.

· Science – Our topic for the half term is ‘Living things and their habitats’. The children will be looking at lots of different mini-beasts and learning about their habitats, as well as creating one of our own.

· PSHE – An introduction to British Values.

· Music – Space and the planets – listening to and comparing music and thinking about tempo. Learning a class song and playing some instruments.

· P.E. – Our units of work for this half term will be gymnastics and dance. We will be learning to move in different ways and using out bodies to make shapes, balance and express ourselves.

· R.E. – We will be learning about the story of creation.

· Art / DT – Our art topic is sculpture and will lead us into our DT day where we will be sculpting an alien from a range of materials.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to come and see me or get in touch, the door is always open!  I look forward to getting to know you all over the coming terms.

Thank you for your support.
