Diamonds' Class

Autumn  2018/19                      DIAMOND CLASS Year 1/2

 

Dear Parents and Carers,

 

I hope you have had a very enjoyable and relaxing summer holiday! We are looking forward to the exciting opportunities planned for this term.

 

Things to remember:

 

  • School times – 8.45am – 3.15pm.
  • Uniform – please make sure ALL items of clothing are named, including coats and hats.
  • PE– Monday and Wednesday. Outdoor trainers will be needed on these days. It is extremely important that your child is equipped for these sessions. It is advisable that your child brings their PE kit in on a Monday and leaves it in school until Friday.
  • Homework will be given out on a Friday and due in on the following Wednesday- please support your child with this where possible.
  • Weekly spellings will be given out on a Monday and must be learnt ready for a spelling test on the Friday.
  • Daily reading– your child will be given the chance to choose their own reading book in school. It will be their responsibility to change the book when they have finished it and get a parent signature. Please support your child in regular reading.
  • SMIRF targets- Your child will have two instant recall target facts (SMIRFs) for maths. Please support your child to practise these at home ready to be tested fortnightly in school. If you have any questions regarding the SMIRF targets, please do not hesitate to ask..

What will we be learning in Diamonds this term?

English:

We will be reading the books ‘Cave Baby’ by Julia Donaldson, ‘Stanley’s Stick’ by John Hegley and ‘Naughty Bus’ by Jan Oke.

Within these sessions we will be focusing on:

  • Lists, labels and captions
  • Character Descriptions
  • Setting Descriptions
  • Story writing
  • Non-chronological reports
  • Letter writing

We will be learning about and using the grammar, punctuation and spelling objectives from the year 1/2 curriculum.

 

Maths:

Number and Place Value

Addition and Subtraction

Measure

Multiplication and Division

Throughout these lessons, children will be practising their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills linked to these units of work.

 

Science:

Our topics for the term are ‘everyday materials’, ‘using our senses’, ‘plants’, ‘animal antics’ and ‘sensing seasons’.

 

History:

The Great Fire of London

  • During this unit of work, the children will be learning about: how the Great Fire of London started, the importance of Samuel Pepys, what life was like then and compare it to life now, who the royal family were at the time and who they are now and explore houses in London then and compare them to houses now.

Geography:

Our geography unit this term is ‘Weather around the World’, where we will be learning how to use atlas to local continents and oceans before investigating the impact of the equator on weather and climate. We will then be comparing the weather in the UK (London) to New York.

 

Computing:

Our topics for this term are ‘online safety & exploring Purple Mash’, ‘effective searching’, ‘lego builders’ and ‘technology outside of school’. During these topics we will be exploring Purple Mash, the internet and search engines. The children will know that to achieve the effect they want when building they must follow accurate instructions before progressing to writing algorithms.

 

PE:

Our units for this term are:

  • Gymnastics
  • Netball
  • Dance
  • Hockey

Music:

In music the children will be exploring sounds and explaining duration (long and short sounds).

 

Art and DT:

In our art lessons, we are going to be researching and looking at the work of Vincent van Gogh.

The skills we are going to be focusing on are drawing and painting.

 

Our DT day this half term will be linked to the History topic of The Great Fire of London. We will develop our cooking skills and bake bread.  

 

PSHE: Our PSHE topics are:

Me and My Relationships

Keeping Myself Safe

 

RE:

The RE unit this term is: Who celebrates what and why?

We will be looking into the celebrations of Christians, Sikhs and Jewish religions.
