Diamonds' Class

Summer A 2017/2018                DIAMONDS CLASS Year 1/2

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you all had a lovely Easter break and didn’t eat too much chocolate. I know I certainly did. I’m looking forward to another new half term which will be filled with all kinds of exciting learning opportunities for the children and hope they are all ready to come back to learn and have fun. Please find the details for this half term set out below.

Things to remember:

  • School times – 8.45am – 3.15pm. Classroom doors are open from 8:35. Please leave your children at the entrance to the classroom, unless you need to speak to myslef or Mrs Calam about your child.
  • Uniform – please make sure ALL items of clothing are named, including coats and PE kits. We seem to have a lot of jumpers and cardigans without names that are left by the end of each week so please add names to these if you haven’t already.
  • PE– Monday and Wednesday. For both of these afternoon sessions, your child will be taking part in competitive games sessions. It is important that your child has their indoor and outdoor PE kit for these sessions as we hope to start getting outside if the weather is kind to us.
  • Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be due in on the following Wednesday- please support your child with this where possible.
  • Weekly spellings will be given out on a Friday (with homework) to be practised at home ready for a test on the following Friday.
  • Your child will have two instant recall target facts (SMIRFs) for maths which were sent home in the homework books. Please try and practise these as we are having a big push on the SMIRFs this half term and hope to give out lots of certificates showing progression.

  • Daily reading – your child will bring home a reading book each day, please sign in your child’s reading record and indicate pages read. We are continuing the reading challenge – each time your child reads at home they will get a point. When your child reaches 21 points they will receive a special prize!

· English
We will be focusing on fiction texts this half term and we have two super books we will be basing our work on. The first is ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers, the second is ‘Pig the Pug’ by Aaron Blabey.
We will be working on writing in the past and the present tense, thinking about nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, working on noun phrases, apostrophes, conjunctions and much more. The children will also be writing instructions, non-chronological reports, narratives, guidebooks and more, as well as continuing lots of work on phonics, alien and real words and spelling. It’s going to be a busy half term.

· Maths
We will be covering lots of different areas of maths this half term and in the final run up to the Year 2 SATs. The children will be learning about 2D and 3D shapes and their different properties. They will be using positional and directional language, creating and reading maps and plotting onto grids. They will also have the opportunity to complete lots of work on reading the time, learning about different coins and notes, finding totals and giving change. We will be revising lots of calculations and thinking about simple graphs and interpreting them.

The afternoon topics this half term will include:

· Geography – Looking at our local area and comparing it to another country. We are going on a Safari to Kenya in Africa – through music, video, art, craft and more. We will be thinking about how Kenya is different to our own country.

· Computing – Purple mash units. We will be looking at different programs that help us to create pictures (finishing off from last half term) and them learning how to create and use spreadsheets.

· Science – Our topic for the half term is ‘Plants’. We will be learning all about the different parts of flowering plants and trees, thinking about what plants need in order to grow and planning experiments that we can do to test this. We will be growing out own plants and writing up the results of our experiments.

· PSHE – My Healthy Lifestyle. In PSHE this half term our focus will be on ourselves and how we can remain happy and healthy. There will be lots of work on feelings, what they look like and what they mean as well as looking at healthy eating and good hygiene.

· Music – Music express Unit to match topic based learning, thinking about various aspects of music.

· P.E. – Our units of work for this half term will be Competitive games. We will be learning about throwing, hitting and catching skills, working as a team and thinking about tactics that may help us win.

· R.E. – We will exploring how we can show that we care through the use of music in faith.

· Art / DT – Our art topic is painting. The children will also have elements of DT in various lessons, especially geography. We also hope to have a DT afternoon where we can really practice some skills.
